How to Recover After a Bad Golf Shot: The RESET Method

How to Recover After a Bad Golf Shot: The RESET Method

One bad shot doesn’t ruin a round. What happens next can.

Every golfer knows the feeling.

You hit one sideways. Miss a short putt. Find water. Make a double on a hole you should have parred.

The shot is over, but somehow you’re still playing it.

You replay the swing walking to the next shot. You start fixing mechanics in your head. Frustration turns into doubt. Now you’re standing over the next ball thinking about the last one.

That’s how one bad shot becomes two.

The goal isn’t to stop caring. It isn’t to pretend the shot didn’t happen.

It’s to stop carrying it.

THE RESET

At Skulls & Strokes, we call that moment THE RESET.

A RESET is the deliberate break between what just happened and what happens next.

The last shot gets acknowledged. Then it gets left where it happened.

Because the next ball doesn’t know you just made double.

It doesn’t know you missed a three footer.

It doesn’t know you’re angry.

The ball doesn’t know how you feel.

It only knows what you do next.

MAKE THE RESET PHYSICAL

A RESET works better when you have something that reminds you to do it.

That’s why the pink skull isn’t just our logo. It’s the trigger.

See it. Touch it. Leave the last shot where it happened.

The Deadly Marker™ was built around that idea.

RESET. PLAY THE NEXT SHOT.

See the Deadly Marker™

1. ACKNOWLEDGE IT

Bad shot?

Call it what it was.

You don’t need to pretend it was fine. You don’t need to laugh when you’re pissed. And you definitely don’t need to spend the next three holes figuring out why it happened.

Give yourself the moment.

Then end the moment.

2. CREATE A PHYSICAL RESET

This is where most golfers get stuck.

Telling yourself to “forget about it” usually isn’t enough. Your mind needs a clear point where the last shot ends and the next one begins.

Create one.

It could be taking your glove off.

Cleaning the club.

Taking one deliberate breath.

Touching your ball marker.

Looking at something you’ve intentionally chosen as your RESET cue.

The specific action matters less than the meaning you give it.

For us, that cue became the pink skull.

When you see it or touch it, the message is simple:

That shot is over. Play the next one.

Do it often enough and the symbol stops being decoration. It becomes a trigger.

3. GET BACK TO WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL

You cannot change the shot you just hit.

You can control the next decision.

Where is the target?

What shot does the situation actually require?

What is your commitment?

That’s it.

Not your score.

Not what you “should” be shooting.

Not the swing from five minutes ago.

This shot. Right now.

4. PLAY THE NEXT SHOT

This is the part that matters.

RESET doesn’t mean the next shot will be perfect.

You may hit another bad one.

Reset again.

Great golfers aren’t great because nothing goes wrong. Golf doesn’t work that way.

The skill is learning how quickly you can return to the shot in front of you.

That is composure.

That is recovery.

And over 18 holes, it matters.

THE BAD HOLES ARE FREE. DON’T LET THEM CHARGE INTEREST.

A double bogey costs what it costs.

The expensive part is when you carry it to the next tee and turn it into another one.

Golfers talk constantly about eliminating mistakes.

We’re more interested in what happens after the mistake.

Because bad shots are coming.

Bad holes are coming.

Pressure is coming.

The question is whether you let them follow you.

BUILD YOUR OWN RESET

The next time a shot gets under your skin, try this:

Acknowledge it.

Create your physical RESET.

Return to what you control.

Play the next shot.

Then repeat it until it becomes yours.

You don’t need to become emotionless.

You need to become better at coming back.

The scorecard remembers. You don’t have to.

WHAT HOLE ALMOST BROKE YOU?

Every golfer has one.

The blowup hole. The water ball. The four putt. The tee shot that made you want to throw the driver into the lake.

But we’re interested in what happened next.

Did you get it back?

Did the round unravel?

Did somebody say something that changed your perspective?

Did you learn something you still use today?

Those are RESET Stories.

And we want yours.

Because Skulls & Strokes isn’t being built around pretending bad golf doesn’t happen.

We’re building it around golfers who keep coming back for the next shot.

LOOK SHARP. SKULLS DOWN. SWING DEADLY.
